The new year got off to a great start in Bimini. In January, we caught a little bit of everything, from a scale bending 101.4 pound wahoo to a bright, beautiful sailfish that was hooked up and later released by a couple of newlyweds. As is customary this time of year, we also landed some big bull dolphins and several nice yellowfin tuna. The one thing all this action had in common – we caught everything right out front between Bimini and Cat Cay.

February is a great month to be in Bimini, with a wide range of target species in good numbers. We should see a few blue marlin showing up in the current edges, somewhere in the range of 600 to 1200 feet of water. Successful anglers targeting blues will be pulling mainly artificial. The blue marlin bite was pretty strong last year and should be the same this year.

For anglers wanting to do some high speed trolling, the wahoo bite will be in full swing this month. Zig zagging between 120 to 450 feet of water from Bimini to Ocean Cay will be the most productive grounds for wahoo. If you’re just looking for table fare, ballyhoo on mono, as well as a few #9 wire rigs, will produce a few wahoo, as well as a few dolphin. And, as always, deep dropping for yelloweye and queen snapper is an awesome way to guarantee a great meal for the entire crew.

Bimini Offshore Fishing Forecast – December 2011

Compliments of Coastal Angler Magazine – Flahama Edition

Bimini will be crawling with wahoo this month. The fish will be thick and of good size. The cold fronts in November worked their magic and this trend is predicted to continue in December. The fronts will push the wahoo along the Bank of Bimini. You will want to troll the ledges zigzagging in anywhere from 150 feet to 600 feet of water. Keep your trolling speed high (at least 10 knots).

My favorite rig for trolling high speeds is a combination double-hooked lure with wahoo belly strips. Your best combinations are traditional colors: black and purple, black and red, or blue and white. Other migratory species you will find in Bimini in December include a strong showing of kingfish and some dolphin and white marlin. They all like the cooler water temps.

December is usually somewhat rough and windy so deep dropping would not be recommended unless you get a couple of calm days between fronts.

Catch ‘em up!

Compliments of Coastal Angler Magazine – Flahama Edition

November marks the time when strong cold fronts will start making their way through the Florida peninsula and the Northern Bahamas. Wahoo season is here in earnest. Also, some blue marlin and white marlin will be showing up eating the small blackfin tuna that will be coming through the area as well. The small blackfin will be great live bait for big blues.

Your best bet for wahoo will be a combo rig. A heavy head lure with a double hook wahoo belly strip behind it or a large ballyhoo. The best lure colors are black and red or black and purple. I like to troll at 9 or 10 knots with a heavy lead (24 or 32 ounces), 30 feet in front of the bait. Use two feet of heavy wire or cable on the rig to avoid cut offs. I use a barrel swivel and then 25 feet of 200 pound monofilament to complete the leader length needed for wiring a big wahoo.

Troll water depths from 150 to 600 feet back and forth. If you have a downrigger it will work well when they are not biting on the surface. For blackfin tuna, small feathers and spoons work great.

Catch ‘em up!

Bimini Fishing Forecast – March

FORECAST BY: Captain Billy BlackBimini Big Game Club Offshore Fleet

For offshore anglers headed to Bimini during the month of March, you will be in for some great fishing.  The wahoo bite has been superb and will continue into March with fish averaging in the 40-60 pound range.  It appears that the blue marlin bite is starting early as a nice 250 pound blue was caught mid-February and several others have been caught since.  Additionally, blackfin and yellowfin tuna will begin migrating through the area.  And if that wasn’t enough you may also catch a few dolphin!

For the blackfin, use artificials with a strip bait or ballyhoo behind them.  Smaller baits work better for the blackfin.  If you are high-speed trolling for wahoo, use artificials with a heavy trolling lead (12 to 24 ounces), 20 feet in front of the lures to get them to the proper depth.  Suggested tackle would be 50 pounds and should be ok for the smaller blue marlin.

As far as “best spots”, anywhere off the western shore north or south of the island.  You may want to “fish into the wind” as an overall strategy.  Remember, you cannot catch a fish if the baits are not presented properly so make it a point to check your baits often especially the deeper ones.

Catch em’ up…and we hope to see you in Bimini soon!

Capt. Billy Black’s forecast appears in the March issue of Coastal Angler Magazine’s Flahama edition.

BIMINI BIG GAME CLUB FISHING REPORT

CATCH: Blue marlin

Bimini Big Game Club offshore charter captain Skipper Gentry, captain of the 38ft. Hatteras Carolina Gentleman, landed a 200lb. blue marlin yesterday while fishing in approx. 660 ft. of water about a mile southwest of the inlet. A nice day’s catch by any standards. However, this story has a little twist – Capt. Skipper was fishing alone on the Carolina Gentleman!

Although he grew up in North Carolina, Skipper knows these waters well – he has been coming to the BBGC since the late 1970s when he was just a toddler!  Skipper has now returned to Bimini to help reestablish the legendary BBGC as a world-class fishing destination. Anglers are fond of saying in order to catch fish, you have to go where the fish are! Well, Capt. Skipper knows where the fish are, so reserve your trip today on the Carolina Gentleman!

BIMINI BIG GAME CLUB FISHING REPORT

CATCH: Wahoo, Yellowtail Snapper

Nothing kills a good fishing trip faster than the 1-2 punch of rough seas and mechanical problems. However, with a little help from the Big Game Club and family back home, these anglers not only salvaged their trip but they also filled the coolers before making it home safely. Cliff Jensen tells the story –

“Will (Diaz), Scott (Bradley), Jeremy (Garland) and myself set out on Friday into what was supposed to be a calm 2′ sea and a gentle 9 kt wind from the SE. NOAA of course was just slightly off when we cleared PE and were greeted with 6-8 footers and a steady 23kt wind out of the SE. No problem for the 36′ Contender however so we pressed on. Loaded down with gear for some reason for what was to be a one night stay, I spun what I thought was the hub on the port engine about half way across. We limped into Bimini and hit up Big Game Club to assess the situation. Cisco was a class act as usual and afforded us dock space until we figured things out. Turns out I had blown the whole lower unit! One thing led to another and thanks to a phone call to a friend, a wonderful wife, and a great Father-In-Law, I had a new lower unit delivered to Bimini the next morning!! We crashed at Big Game for the night and I have to say the place is looking phenomenal. Mark Ellert and the boys there are doing a great job at bringing not only that place back to life but injecting life into the whole Island as well. Lots of new shops open and even a new waterfront park…

Morning rolls around and after catching bait, the new lower arrives. We’re money now! Find a nice sandy beach inside a cove to change it out and bingo we’re in business. Time to fish man.

Got a late start due to the engine but managed one nice Wahoo that day in the 30+ pound range and missed 2. With the winds dying down and cooler weather, we decided to do some deep dropping and then just sleep on the boat that night at our yellowtail spot and get a nice early start in the morning to go for Wahoo again as we had to get home early on Sunday.

Got up early after a rough nights “sleep” on the boat and got on ’em again just South of the entrance off the ledge.

Cliff – that’s the best hard luck angler story we have heard all year! Next time, no need to experience a rough night of “sleep”, though – we are giving you a free room night during your next stay at the Big Game Club!

Swordfish Extravaganza II a Big Hit in South Florida

Kudos to Capt. Skip Smith and the Swordfish Club for the record breaking attendance at the Swordfish Extravaganza II event, which was held last week at the IGFA headquarters in Dania Beach, FL.  Major names in the big game tackle business showcased their latest products for hooking up these behemoths, and key organizations produced informative seminars on the fishery. NOAA and HMS gave presentations on government efforts to rebuild “trust” with recreational fishermen, and highlighted the importance of reporting your sword catch so the USA can keep a valid  tally in regards to our international quota.

Congrats again to Capt. Skip and the Swordfish Club crew for a great event!

Bimini Offshore Fishing Forecast

Courtesy of Coastal Angler Magazine

For South Florida residents and visitors, having the beautiful islands of North and South Bimini a mere 50-60 miles away certainly does open up a host of fishing adventures and opportunities!

August and September are typically similar with respect to the fishing conditions, except for the itinerant tropical storm that may impact the northwest Bahamas. Conditions are light winds, calm seas and warm water. August was a great month as September is forecast to be the same. Currents have been light and this will contribute to excellent fishing.

Bottom fishing on the reefs should produce grouper and yellow tail snapper along with the usual staples. For those that deep drop, mutton snapper, amberjack, yellow eyes and queens will be bending your rod. Trolling to the north, be prepared for your share of kingfish and mackerel. As we are now turning the corner on the autumn season, do not be surprised to hook a small wahoo or an occasional sail.

Just a quick note to mention that in late summer, fast developing and moving thunderstorms are a distinct possibility so ensure you are prepared and ready for changing weather conditions.

See you in Bimini soon!
