Black, who has spent the last 40 years as a charter captain and operated a premier charter service out of Walker’s Cay from 1977 to 2004, has held, at one time or another, many of the Bahamian record catches for Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Bluefin Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Dolphin, Wahoo and Sailfish. The Duchess, his 50-foot Hatteras has just come out of the yard, having been fully updated and re-powered to offer exceptional comfort and safety.

“There’s 110 miles of water between Walkers and Bimini, and Old Bahama Bay is almost dead center”, commented Mark Ellert, President of Guy Harvey Outpost. “Few know these fishing grounds as well as Billy and The Duchess, and we intend to make the Outpost at Old Bahama Bay the go-to fishing destination in the northern Bahamas.” Sixty miles east of Palm Beach, Old Bahama Bay has 70 luxury guestrooms, a 70 slip deep water marina with fuel and on-site customs, and a full array of resort amenities.

“I’ve been ‘Dancing with the Duchess’ for forty years”, said Captain Black. “These waters are our stage, and we know every square inch of it. Customers of Old Bahama Bay now have an exceptional opportunity to join us on stage and catch all the action first hand.”

This June, Guy Harvey Outpost brings its signature Bonfire Tournament Series back to Old Bahama Bay for the summertime marlin and dolphin fishing action. Each Bonfire event is a multi-day celebration featuring art shows, cooking competition and extreme sport demonstrations with nightly beach bonfires of monument sized metal fish sculptures by artist Bobby Little.

ALICE TOWN, BIMINI – Designed by Kent Ullberg, one of the world’s foremost wildlife sculptors, the Hemingway-Lerner Trophy will not only go to the overall winning team at the upcoming Billfish Invitational, but will commemorate the ideals of friendship, teamwork and the pursuit of sportfishing achievement.

Celebrated artist and conservationist Guy Harvey will host The Billfish Invitational at the historic Bimini Big Game Club located in Bimini’s Alice Town. The tournament will run from May 18-21.

With the Hemingway-Lerner Trophy, Ullberg has cast a perpetual “Fighting Blue Marlin” trophy commemorating the achievement of the tournament’s top billfish team. Ullberg is the sculptor of theInternational Game Fish Association’s (IGFA) signature monument, “Sword Dance”, which graces the IGFA’s museum fountain in Dania Beach, Florida.

The Frank Johnson Trophy, designed by noted Hawaii-born artist Ed Pang, has also been created for the Billfish Invitational to celebrate personal achievement in the advancement or recreational sportfishing/billfishing.

Host to numerous major sport fishing tournaments for more than half a century, The Billfish Invitational marks the Bimini Big Game Club’s return to world-class bluewater tournament angling, after a decade long hiatus.

The all release tournament will feature three days of fishing, and target all billfish species.  In addition to individual prizes, the tournament format will include the award of the two perpetual trophies, to be displayed in the Club’s new trophy room lounge.

Bimini’s location along the legendary Gulf Stream (a “river” of warm water) location is at the apex of a superhighway for migrating fish and acts as a kind of sushi conveyor belt carrying abundant food to the local fish. Deepwater game fish include marlin, tuna, sailfish, wahoo and swordfish, while big grouper, barracuda and schools of snapper can be found on the reefs. Bimini’s flats are home the fishermen’s favorite prey, bonefish and permit. With more than 50-record-setting catches in the waters around the island, Bimini has earned its title of Sport Fishing Capital of the World.

Eligible species for the Billfish Tournament include Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish, Spearfish and Swordfish.

Tournament sponsors include Woods and Associates, which originally began in Fort Myers Beach as Woods & Oviatt in 1973, has long been a fixture in South Florida yacht and sportfishing boat sales.  A Blue Marlin Sponsor, the family-run firm joins Hell’s Bay Boatworks and Costa del Mar sunglasses (Sailfish category) and by Rybovich, the Bimini Boatyard, Johnson Marine Electronics, Seacoast Marine Finance, ACR Electronics, Luu Marine & Associates and Sky Limo Air Charters (Wahoo category).

Administered by the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation and the IGFA, net tournament proceeds will be reinvested in Bimini and surrounding waters. For registration and further details, contact Captain Ned Stone at nstone@guyharveyoutpost.com, or call 954-524-2225 (office) or 954-205-9595 (cell).

ALICE TOWN, BIMINI—JANUARY 7, 2011—The Grey Ghosts of Bimini are beckoning!

For those who love fishing skinny water and have an artistic bent, the legendary Bimini Big Game Club is putting out a call for online submissions for a virtual boat parade to be celebrated as part of the inaugural Bonefish Bimini Challenge—scheduled for February 25th.

The day’s events will include a ‘bragging rights” tournament with some of the world’s top fly fishing writers participating to be followed by a real parade that celebrates the 40th anniversary of catching the 16lb, 3oz monster bonefish in Bimini guided by the legendary Ansil Saunders. The second and final day of fishing in Leg 1 of the Bahamas Wahoo Challenge has come to a close and all the fish have been weighed at the Big Game Club. Airborne came on strong during day two with four fish totalling 115.3 Pounds, and Shine On came in with four fish totalling 99.65 pounds.  None of the remaining competitors weighed a qualifying fish on day two.

Using the four best fish of the two days, Shine On came in with 116.15 pounds and Airborne in with 115.30 pounds, followed by Hit That with 42.2.  The difference between 1st and second places was LESS THAN ONE POUND!

Day 1 of the Bahamas Wahoo Challenge has come to a close (though the Big Game Bar & Grill will likely be open late into the night!). Capt. Ned Stone sent this report from the Big Game Club:

“Most of the anglers began the morning in pants and long sleeves, but were in t-shirts and shorts by mid-day as Friday eventually turned into a typical Bimini afternoon – beautiful and sunny with a brisk breeze.

The fleet got off a bit before 0700 – though a few stragglers (who shall remain unnamed) left a bit later, no doubt a result of having too much fun at the party last night!  Most of the group ran south and enjoyed the following sea. The fishing was great – check out some photos here. Airborne is in the lead with 106.9 pounds, Shine On is in 2nd with 59.5 and Hit That is in 3rd with 42.2.”

More reports and photos tomorrow, so be sure to check in with us here and on our Facebook Page and Twitter feed.

The Big Game Is On! The 1st leg of the Bahamas Wahoo Challenge begins today at the Bimini Big Game Club! Capt. Ned Stone, Dir. of Program Development for Guy Harvey Outpost Ltd. , headed to the BBGC early yesterday to prepare for the tournament.  Ned took a quick break from the action to send us a report of the pre-tournament conditions:

“We were blessed with an amazingly beautiful day today.  I went by the Bimini Biological Field Station – AKA the Shark Lab – for a quick visit with staffers Christine, Jill and Brian.  We decided to take advantage of the good weather and headed back to the BBGC with hopes of tagging a bull shark or two.  The sharks showed up – along with a good number of tarpon (including one upwards of 100lbs.) – but no luck so far on getting a bite. It seems the bulls are smart enough to know when we put a hook in the bait!

The marina is starting to fil up. The Sarah K and the Airborne are in and getting ready for the Wahoo Challenge, and a half dozen catamarans came in to clear on their way East. It’s been another busy day in Paradise!”

Ned will be sending more updates and photos throughout the week, so continue to follow the Guy Harvey Outpost blog, Facebook Page and Twitter feed for full reports on all the action from the Wahoo Challenge.
