Fall: Prime Time for Flats Fishing in the Keys and Bahamas!

“Flats Slam” by Guy Harvey.

By Sue Cocking, Guy Harvey Outpost staff writer

Late summer/early autumn is prime time for flats fishing in the Keys and the Bahamas.  With few visiting anglers and plenty of bonefish, you have the shallow, target-rich environment pretty much to yourself.  And in the Keys, you’ll also get shots at tarpon and permit, raising hopes of a flats grand slam.

Fall brings higher tides and cooler waters, expanding the territory of feeding bonefish that spent less time foraging on the flats in the searing summer heat.

You can sight-fish for them from a poled skiff or you can simply stake out up current from a sand-and-grass-dotted flat and wait for them to feed into the tide.  By far, the best bait is a live shrimp with the tail pinched off fished on light line with a split shot for added casting distance.  To better your chances, carry dozens more live shrimp than you need for bait, cut them into pieces and toss them out as chum.

The islands of the Bahamas present your best chance of catching and releasing a bonefish on fly rod.  With seemingly endless shallow-water habitat and abundant fish of all sizes unaccustomed to encountering most fly patterns, the islands allow the novice angler to make plenty of mistakes, learn from them quickly, and eventually capture the prize.

Bonefish are fun to catch on the flats on any kind of tackle because of their warp-speed, drag-screaming runs after you hook them. Keep your line tight and a bend in the rod, and eventually you’ll catch up to them.

Bonefishing  is big business in the both the Keys and Bahamas, generating tens of millions of dollars in economic impact each year.  In the Keys, anglers fishing the ocean sides of Islamorada and Key Largo can pretty much expect to encounter bonefish most days, but the fishery has suffered declines in the Florida Bay back country over the past decade. Anglers and guides want to know why and what can be done to reverse the trend. The non-profit Bonefish Tarpon Trust has commissioned a study by scientists from Florida International University to look into everything from water quality to prey availability to determine the causes and identify solutions.  The researchers are also surveying and interviewing bonefish enthusiasts from Biscayne Bay through the Lower Keys to chronicle their experiences.

In the Bahamas, the government recently announced draft legislation that would impose licenses and fees on foreigners fishing for bonefish and require operators of fishing lodges to be citizens or permanent residents of the Bahamas.  Bonefish Tarpon Trust– in collaboration with scores of anglers, guides, scientists, conservationists and lodge operators– countered with its own recommendations for a comprehensive conservation and management plan for the species.  The government is mulling over those suggestions.

Completing the flats grand slam with tarpon and permit is more than doable in the Keys in early fall, especially if you use live bait.

The onset of cold fronts to the north pushes huge schools of forage fish such as mullet, pilchards, sardines and glass minnows south along ocean and bay waters in the Keys, with tarpon happily chasing and devouring them.  These ‘silver kings’ are not as large as the monsters typically encountered in the spring and summer migrations, but they are sporty enough on 20-pound tackle.  Your best bet for a spectacular experience is to use a live mullet hooked with a circle hook through the upper lip and rigged with a float along the edges of flats, in channels and around the U.S. 1 bridges.

Tarpon typically pile on the mullet, crashing, splashing and leaping while you hang on tight and let the fish have its way.  The moment it lets up, you put the heat on it.

The experience is so addictive that a veteran Keys guide once said that if tarpon could only be found in the Himalayas, anglers and guides wouldn’t hesitate to follow them there.

Permit, with an oval-shaped silver and yellow body and black sickle tail, is more common in the Lower Keys than the Upper Keys, but you still stand a decent chance of catching one in the northern regions.

These bulldogs of the flats rarely hesitate to gulp a live crab cast in front of their noses.  But accounts are rampant of anglers making bad casts to the fish’s tail only to have it whirl around and inhale the bait.  For sight-fishing, the best locations are narrow strip banks along both the ocean and bay sides of the Keys with hard bottom and a strong current.  Permit also can be found in channels and around bridges waiting to pounce on crabs sweeping by on the tide.

Trying to catch them on the flats with a fly rod can end up being a lifelong quest similar to the 100 Years War.  Tame your bucket list to include live crabs, and you will not be disappointed.

Sue Cocking chronicles the Guy Harvey Outpost travel and adventure experience in regular blog posts on GuyHarveyOutpostNews.com/.  For 21 years, Cocking covered the full spectrum of outdoors adventure opportunities in South Florida and beyond for the Miami Herald, including fishing, diving, hunting, paddling, camping, sailing and powerboat racing.  She is a certified scuba diver and holder of an IGFA women’s world fly fishing record for a 29-pound permit.

Guy Harvey Outpost Initiates “Trash to Treasure” Art Program

11707509_946851132049337_3373697342381427908_nWhile a fleet of anglers chased mahi and wahoo in Guy Harvey Outpost Resorts’ Bonfire Tournament on West End, Grand Bahama Island in June, artist Bobby Little stayed behind, keeping very busy at a table in the shade of Old Bahama Bay Resort as part of the “Trash To Treasure” initiative of the Bonfire Series.

One of several artists to be featured in the Guy Harvey Outpost “Trash to Treasure” program, Little used a wet saw and grinder to demonstrate for local artisans and resort guests how to turn waste conch shells into fashion jewelry.

Over a few hours, the piles of discarded shells were crafted into beautiful designs of angelfish, sea turtles, mermaids, pelicans and dolphins.

Guests purchased the finished products for $10 to $20 apiece, with a portion of the proceeds going to local vendors. Spending about $1,300 for tools and supplies, Little says, a Bahamian artisan could set up at a resort and make back his or her investment in about two days.

“One full-size conch shell is worth $300 to $500 when it’s cut into jewelry,” Little said.  “You could create an industry on every island.  Anyone who wants to work can work.  Now you have a product made in the Bahamas you can sell in the Bahamas or you could export.”

The Bonfire Beach Bash & Tournament at Old Bahama Bay featured Little– a 53-year-old Hollywood, Fla. native who has lived on Rum Cay near San Salvador for decades and who doesn’t limit his artistic vision to mounds of conch shells.  On his frequent beach strolls, he collects washed-up plastic and turns it into trinkets; fashions rings out of whelk shells; converts dead coral into candle holders and lamps; and is best known for his dramatic ‘burning’ wahoo and marlin sculptures made of scrap metal.  A 16-foot wahoo filled with flaming palm fronds and smoldering charcoal dramatically lit up the post-tournament Beach Bash. Both the wahoo and marlin are expected to be turned into artificial reefs that create habitat for marine creatures and attract divers.

Guy Harvey Outpost Resorts proposes to launch a series of beach clean-ups combined with fishing and art festivals in the Bahamas and South Florida where artists would collect trash, turn it into something beautiful, and compete for prizes for the best creations.  Proceeds would be put toward ocean conservation.

“It will benefit the artists, the islands– anywhere there’s trash,” Little said. “And there’s such a large demographic that follows Guy Harvey’s name.”

The Green Turtle Club  Co-Hosted the action packed second leg of the 2015 Bahamas Billfish Championship.

BBC Day One:  White marlin dominated day one action.  Something Fishy got off to a hot start with a double header of whites.  Island Time got on the board with a sailfish. Game Changer, Marlin Raptor & Whisky Won all got in on the morning bite with white marlin.  Wave Paver & Anticipation jumped to the top with afternoon blue marlin.

BBC Day Two:  The white marlin bite remained hot with the blues showing up in the afternoon.  Sandrita  jumped to the lead today on the strength of on blue marlin and three  white marlin today.  Torta started their day with a sailfish added a double header of white marlin and nabbed a blue marlin late in the day to catch a slam; which will give them a nice bunch of bonus points and the overall lead after two days.

Early leaders Something Fishy improved their numbers with another white marlin to go with their day one pair.   Anticipation added second day blue marlin to their first day fish to stay in contention for the top spot.  Whisky Won released a blue and a white to go with their day one white to move into third place after two days.  Nothing is settled and with the way some boats have gotten hot hands it is still anyone’s ball game.

BBC Day Three

The white marlin bite continues to build; 8 whites day one, 9 day two, with 11 on day three for a total of 28 whites!  Seventeen billfish caught on day three including three sailfish, three blue marlin and 11 whites.  This is more whites than were caught in all of 2014.  Hopefully this is a sign of a rebounding white marlin population.

Wave Paver started things off at the six minute mark on day three releasing a blue.   Ten minutes later Game Changer released a pair of whites announcing that the bite was on.  Hit n Run followed with a white marlin and sailfish released.  Something Fishy then released the first of their two white marlin for the day before Hit n Run released the third of their four whites all before noon.  Wave Paver would add a white, while Hit n Run would get their “Slam” with a blue marlin late in the day.  Pandemonium finished the day and the tournament hooked up to a blue marlin at lines out.  All ears stay tuned to the radio when a boat is still hooked up at lines out.  It only took Pandemonium another   17 minutes to release their fish.

Grand Slam points were key as Hit n Run won with Torta in Second Place on the strength of their Grand Slam bonus points.  Wave Paver was third followed by Anticipation.  It is great to see FIVE Lady Anglers on the board for the event.

Congratulations to the winners and all the anglers!

The next Guy Harvey Outpost event will be the 2nd Annual Beach Bash Bonfire and Tournament at Old Bahama Bay June 25-28th.

The 2015 Bahamas Billfish Championship is under way in Abaco with Green Turtle Cay the next stop.  Abaco regulars Jichi, Wave Paver and Torta took the top spots with solid performances.  Teque took the early lead on day one with a blue marlin and a sailfish but Wave Paver passed them by before lines out; when they added a blue marlin to their early white.  On day two, Torta added a blue and a white to move ahead of Wave Paver and TequeJichi got on the board early with two blue marlin and did not look back; adding a white and another blue to seal the deal on day two.   Day three saw plenty of action among the leaders as Wave Paver released two blue marlin and a white to make a move but Jichi “Slammed” the door shut with a sail, a white and a blue to extend their lead and collect slam bonus points.

BBC_AIM_Logo NO DATESThe fleet caught 26 billfish an average of 1.13 billfish per boat.  Full Time brought a 597 pound blue marlin to the scales.  She was over the 100 inch minimum length but they actually lost 3 points compared to what they would have scored had they released her.
This week the BBC moves to Green Turtle Cay.  The Green Turtle Club, a Guy Harvey Outpost Expedition Lodge is co-host for the event.  The Green Turtle Club is ideally located in central Abaco allowing easy access to all the region’s famed blue marlin grounds.  These waters have produced huge blue marlin including the current Bahamian Record of 1119 pounds caught during the BBC in 2011.  The Green Turtle Club is sold out for this event.

In addition to all the billfish caught big dorado kept anglers on their toes.  They were caught AND eaten!  Next up the BBC heads to Treasure Cay May 27-30.  The next Guy Harvey Outpost event will be the 2nd Annual Beach Bash Bonfire and Tournament June 25th – 28th at Old Bahama Bay.

The Duchess, his 50-foot Hatteras has just come out of the yard, having been fully updated and re-powered to offer exceptional comfort and safety.

“There’s 110 miles of water between Walkers and Bimini, and Old Bahama Bay is almost dead center”, commented Mark Ellert, President of Guy Harvey Outpost. “Few know these fishing grounds as well as Billy and The Duchess, and we intend to make the Outpost at Old Bahama Bay the go-to fishing destination in the northern Bahamas.” Sixty miles east of Palm Beach, Old Bahama Bay has 70 luxury guestrooms, a 70 slip deep water marina with fuel and on-site customs, and a full array of resort amenities.

“I’ve been ‘Dancing with the Duchess’ for forty years”, said Captain Black. “These waters are our stage, and we know every square inch of it. Customers of Old Bahama Bay now have an exceptional opportunity to join us on stage and catch all the action first hand.”

This June, Guy Harvey Outpost brings its signature Bonfire Tournament Series back to Old Bahama Bay for the summertime marlin and dolphin fishing action. Each year we honor our planet with Earth Day. Many of us participate in organized activities. Organized or not the most important thing to do is, get off the couch, get outside and get into nature! Ideally, get wet, but GET OUTSIDE!

Image converted using ifftoany

Here are some Earth Day suggestions:

Get out early and listen to the birds. They have lots to say first thing in the morning.

Go for a sunrise beach walk. Take a bag with you and fill it with trash on your way back.

Take the dog to a new park. Heck, take the kids to the park too!

Go snorkeling in the nearest body of water. What is there to be discovered?

Count the turtle nests at Guy Harvey Outpost, St. Pete Beach

Lie on your back in the sand and let it the grains fill the voids to support you.

Go Fish!

Enjoy your church’s Earth Day activities.

Bike a new trail, take a different route.

Watch for the Green Flash at sunset from Old Bahama Bay, Bimini Sands, the Islander Bayside, St. Pete Beach, or the Southern Cross Club.

VaughFred.Bonefish

Go paddle boarding on new waters or your favorite water.

Get away from city lights; lie on your back and count stars.  (Island beaches are excellent for this.)

Walk through wet grass barefoot.

Paint a picture.

Plant something pretty in your yard.

Go Diving!

Feed your senses, close your eyes and smell the plants, the sea and the earth around you.

Get on your hands and knees and grab hold of mother earth. Give her a hug, she deserves one.

Join Guy at Jacksonville Beach this Saturday April 25th 9-11 am for the Jax Beach Clean-Up! Registration takes place in front of Seawalk Pavilion at the corner of 1st Street N. & 1st Ave. N. Jacksonville Beach.

EarthDay.org has lots of organized activities for you to choose from.

PLEASE take the time to get outside and enjoy your planet.

Bonefish and Tarpon Trust Hosts Their 5th International Symposium

Bonefish and Tarpon Trust hosted their 5th International Symposium at the IGFA Hall of Fame and Museum in Dania Beach, Florida. Hundreds of conservation minded attendees turned out for the educational and event packed weekend, all with a focus on raising awareness about the conservation of bonefish, tarpon, and permit.

Scientists from the United States, Canada, Brazil, Belize, the Bahamas, and Cuba were on hand to present their latest findings on a variety of topics concerning the three slam species.  A number of fly and spin fishing clinics were held for the attendees to enjoy and there were also panel discussions with some of today’s most knowledgeable fishing guides and angling legends from around the world, sharing their insight and stories about bonefish, tarpon, and permit.

BTT 2014 Flies

Friday evening saw the inaugural BTT Art and Film Festival, where some of the biggest names in saltwater art and photography displayed their work and helped raise funds for BTT. The festival also featured screenings of many excellent short films, all competing for a chance to win prizes from Orvis and Costa and the title of Viewer’s Choice. In the end, “Knockin’ On The Door” by WorldAngling took home the win. The winner of BTT’s Best Conservation Message went to Marc Montocchio for his trailer of the film “Origins Of The Sky.”

The highlight of the film screening was the world premier of “90 Miles“, in which filmmaker Will Benson of WorldAngling highlighted his recent trip to Cuba with BTT scientists and showed the world that although the US has had differences with its neighbor to the south, we also share many commonalities including a love for fishing and a passion for the conservation of our environment.

Capping off the two-day event was a Saturday evening silent auction followed by the “Passing The Torch” Banquet. The banquet celebrated some up and coming members of the saltwater fishing community in a short “Passing The Torch” film. The film highlighted Paul Puckett, Jorge Martinez, Captain C.A. Richardson, Captain Will Benson, Meredith McCord and Oliver White for their support of BTT and their efforts to promote conservation of bonefish, tarpon, and permit.

During the banquet, BTT awarded three Conservation Stewardship awards to deserving members of the fishing community. The Flats Stewardship Award went to former FWC commissioner Ken Wright for his tireless efforts in securing the catch and release status of bonefish and tarpon in Florida, as well as the banning of the “Boca Grande Jig”. The Lefty Kreh Sportsman of the Year Award was presented to Costa Del Mar’s VP of Marketing, Al Perkinson, for his immense support of BTT through Project Permit, and the Curt Gowdy Media Memorial Award went to legendary author and Buccaneers and Bones star Tom McGuane.

The American Fisheries Society also presented Bonefish and Tarpon Trust with the prestigious Conservation Achievement Award for the Fisheries Management Section.  This annual award recognizes an organization’s outstanding contributions to fishery conservation or fishery science. Upon receiving the award, BTT’s Director of Operations Dr. Aaron Adams noted, “BTT is extremely flattered and proud to receive this award from the American Fisheries Society. This award confirms the validity of our approach to fisheries conservation, and provides encouragement moving forward.”

The two day event saw roughly 350 registered attendees come through the doors and went on to gross nearly $117,000 for Bonefish and Tarpon Trust. Symposium Chairman Chris Peterson of Hell’s Bay Boatworks commented, “The scientific presentations were astronomically enlightening, the instruction sessions legendary, and the fellowship among like minded anglers…priceless.” BTT President Matt Connolly added, “Like me, I suspect that nearly all 350 Symposium attendees left inspired by the “Legends”, encouraged by the exciting scientific breakthroughs, and energized knowing their investment in BTT has delivered such dynamic returns in but three years! The many inspiring discoveries shared with us at the Symposium made it apparent that we must transform this emerging scientific knowledge into enlightened management of flats ecosystems throughout the Caribbean. It is a challenge BTT is now, more than ever, well prepared to meet!”

Connecting With One Special Veteran

On this Veterans’ Day the staff at Guy Harvey Outpost would like to share a letter we received from a Veteran. This letter has moved each of us and we are honored to have Veterans as our guests.

Dear Anyone,

My name is Christian and I am a disabled veteran. I recently had an opportunity to spend time at the Islander Resort, a Guy Harvey Outpost on Islamorda. I have to say it changed my life. I am writing Mr. Harvey and wondering if he would ever be interested in opening a facility in the islands for veterans? I know its crazy but I spent 3 days there and I slept more in three days than in years. I felt at peace and I didn’t have bad dreams. I got to feel and smell and touch things without feeling anger or hate, I found my Jesus.. My wife Janet cried because for the first time in years I slept, and it was a beautiful sleep..

I bought a print of yours that hangs in my office at home.  I look at it everyday and it brings me.. Hope, joy, peace.. I don’t have a name like Guy Harvey but I believe your name can change the lives of veterans… The life style can release the anger and start the healing. I know this is a long shot and I don’t expect much but what if we could open another resort? What if we could give them peace? What if we could save a generation from suffering and give them hope? No matter what happens I thank you. I am staying at the Islander again in July… No matter what I thank you for sleep.. I can never repay you for the peace I feel in Islamorada.

I hope and pray for you.. Thank you, Christian

2014-Veterans-Day

On Christian’s July visit he brought his family including his father (a former Navy SEAL).  We look forward to the family’s next visit.

See our response in the next Outpost Blog post.
