The Green Turtle Club  Co-Hosted the action packed second leg of the 2015 Bahamas Billfish Championship.

BBC Day One:  White marlin dominated day one action.  Something Fishy got off to a hot start with a double header of whites.  Island Time got on the board with a sailfish. Game Changer, Marlin Raptor & Whisky Won all got in on the morning bite with white marlin.  Wave Paver & Anticipation jumped to the top with afternoon blue marlin.

BBC Day Two:  The white marlin bite remained hot with the blues showing up in the afternoon.  Sandrita  jumped to the lead today on the strength of on blue marlin and three  white marlin today.  Torta started their day with a sailfish added a double header of white marlin and nabbed a blue marlin late in the day to catch a slam; which will give them a nice bunch of bonus points and the overall lead after two days.

Early leaders Something Fishy improved their numbers with another white marlin to go with their day one pair.   Anticipation added second day blue marlin to their first day fish to stay in contention for the top spot.  Whisky Won released a blue and a white to go with their day one white to move into third place after two days.  Nothing is settled and with the way some boats have gotten hot hands it is still anyone’s ball game.

BBC Day Three

The white marlin bite continues to build; 8 whites day one, 9 day two, with 11 on day three for a total of 28 whites!  Seventeen billfish caught on day three including three sailfish, three blue marlin and 11 whites.  This is more whites than were caught in all of 2014.  Hopefully this is a sign of a rebounding white marlin population.

Wave Paver started things off at the six minute mark on day three releasing a blue.   Ten minutes later Game Changer released a pair of whites announcing that the bite was on.  Hit n Run followed with a white marlin and sailfish released.  Something Fishy then released the first of their two white marlin for the day before Hit n Run released the third of their four whites all before noon.  Wave Paver would add a white, while Hit n Run would get their “Slam” with a blue marlin late in the day.  Pandemonium finished the day and the tournament hooked up to a blue marlin at lines out.  All ears stay tuned to the radio when a boat is still hooked up at lines out.  It only took Pandemonium another   17 minutes to release their fish.

Grand Slam points were key as Hit n Run won with Torta in Second Place on the strength of their Grand Slam bonus points.  Wave Paver was third followed by Anticipation.  It is great to see FIVE Lady Anglers on the board for the event.

Congratulations to the winners and all the anglers!

The next Guy Harvey Outpost event will be the 2nd Annual Beach Bash Bonfire and Tournament at Old Bahama Bay June 25-28th.

The 2015 Bahamas Billfish Championship is under way in Abaco with Green Turtle Cay the next stop.  Abaco regulars Jichi, Wave Paver and Torta took the top spots with solid performances.  Teque took the early lead on day one with a blue marlin and a sailfish but Wave Paver passed them by before lines out; when they added a blue marlin to their early white.  On day two, Torta added a blue and a white to move ahead of Wave Paver and TequeJichi got on the board early with two blue marlin and did not look back; adding a white and another blue to seal the deal on day two.   Day three saw plenty of action among the leaders as Wave Paver released two blue marlin and a white to make a move but Jichi “Slammed” the door shut with a sail, a white and a blue to extend their lead and collect slam bonus points.

BBC_AIM_Logo NO DATESThe fleet caught 26 billfish an average of 1.13 billfish per boat.  Full Time brought a 597 pound blue marlin to the scales.  She was over the 100 inch minimum length but they actually lost 3 points compared to what they would have scored had they released her.
This week the BBC moves to Green Turtle Cay.  The Green Turtle Club, a Guy Harvey Outpost Expedition Lodge is co-host for the event.  The Green Turtle Club is ideally located in central Abaco allowing easy access to all the region’s famed blue marlin grounds.  These waters have produced huge blue marlin including the current Bahamian Record of 1119 pounds caught during the BBC in 2011.  The Green Turtle Club is sold out for this event.

In addition to all the billfish caught big dorado kept anglers on their toes.  They were caught AND eaten!  Next up the BBC heads to Treasure Cay May 27-30.  The next Guy Harvey Outpost event will be the 2nd Annual Beach Bash Bonfire and Tournament June 25th – 28th at Old Bahama Bay.

Guy Harvey Outpost Resorts announced that legendary sportfishing Captain Billy Black has joined the company’s Expedition Outfitter program, and will operate sportfishing charters out of Old Bahama Bay Resort & Yacht Harbour on West End, a member of the company’s Expedition Collection portfolio, starting April 15th.

IMG_0027

Black, who has spent the last 40 years as a charter captain and operated a premier charter service out of Walker’s Cay from 1977 to 2004, has held, at one time or another, many of the Bahamian record catches for Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Bluefin Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Dolphin, Wahoo and Sailfish. The Duchess, his 50-foot Hatteras has just come out of the yard, having been fully updated and re-powered to offer exceptional comfort and safety.

“There’s 110 miles of water between Walkers and Bimini, and Old Bahama Bay is almost dead center”, commented Mark Ellert, President of Guy Harvey Outpost. “Few know these fishing grounds as well as Billy and The Duchess, and we intend to make the Outpost at Old Bahama Bay the go-to fishing destination in the northern Bahamas.” Sixty miles east of Palm Beach, Old Bahama Bay has 70 luxury guestrooms, a 70 slip deep water marina with fuel and on-site customs, and a full array of resort amenities.

“I’ve been ‘Dancing with the Duchess’ for forty years”, said Captain Black. “These waters are our stage, and we know every square inch of it. Customers of Old Bahama Bay now have an exceptional opportunity to join us on stage and catch all the action first hand.”

This June, Guy Harvey Outpost brings its signature Bonfire Tournament Series back to Old Bahama Bay for the summertime marlin and dolphin fishing action. Each Bonfire event is a multi-day celebration featuring art shows, cooking competition and extreme sport demonstrations with nightly beach bonfires of monument sized metal fish sculptures by artist Bobby Little.

Each year we honor our planet with Earth Day. Many of us participate in organized activities. Organized or not the most important thing to do is, get off the couch, get outside and get into nature! Ideally, get wet, but GET OUTSIDE!

Image converted using ifftoany

Here are some Earth Day suggestions:

Get out early and listen to the birds. They have lots to say first thing in the morning.

Go for a sunrise beach walk. Take a bag with you and fill it with trash on your way back.

Take the dog to a new park. Heck, take the kids to the park too!

Go snorkeling in the nearest body of water. What is there to be discovered?

Count the turtle nests at Guy Harvey Outpost, St. Pete Beach

Lie on your back in the sand and let it the grains fill the voids to support you.

Go Fish!

Enjoy your church’s Earth Day activities.

Bike a new trail, take a different route.

Watch for the Green Flash at sunset from Old Bahama Bay, Bimini Sands, the Islander Bayside, St. Pete Beach, or the Southern Cross Club.

VaughFred.Bonefish

Go paddle boarding on new waters or your favorite water.

Get away from city lights; lie on your back and count stars.  (Island beaches are excellent for this.)

Walk through wet grass barefoot.

Paint a picture.

Plant something pretty in your yard.

Go Diving!

Feed your senses, close your eyes and smell the plants, the sea and the earth around you.

Get on your hands and knees and grab hold of mother earth. Give her a hug, she deserves one.

Join Guy at Jacksonville Beach this Saturday April 25th 9-11 am for the Jax Beach Clean-Up! Registration takes place in front of Seawalk Pavilion at the corner of 1st Street N. & 1st Ave. N. Jacksonville Beach.

EarthDay.org has lots of organized activities for you to choose from.

PLEASE take the time to get outside and enjoy your planet.

2015 Bonfire Series Is Off to a Red Hot Start at Old Bahama Bay

March 2, 2015 at 8:35 pm | Posted in Bahamas, Fishing, Fishing Tournaments, Grand Bahamas Island, Marine Art, Old Bahama Bay, Uncategorized, Wahoo | Leave a comment

Sharkbait kicked off the 2015 Guy Harvey Outpost Bonfire Series on day one as the first boat to weigh fish.  Their five largest wahoo totaled out at 182.3 pounds with their biggest tipping the scales at 44.1 pounds.     Side Show weighed in with a 52.0 pound wahoo to push their way to the top of the Largest Fish category.

A succession of boats weighed fish but none displaced Sharkbait until the second hour of weigh-in when Fishin A’ Loan brought five large wahoo to the scales.  To heighten the drama, Fishin A’ Loan weighed their smallest fish first and the largest last.  They had three fish over 50 pounds including the largest of the day at 63.9 pounds.  Their total weight for day one was 239.8 pounds!

The drama did not stop there as local favorites Matchless arrived at the weigh station just minutes before the closing bell at 5pm.  Their three fish totaled 87.8 pounds to put them in third place at the end of day one.

As the evening festivities began the wind began to build.  Day two would prove to be more challenging fishing.  All the boats got out and the leaders put in extra effort trying to take advantage of the “No limits,” fishing.   Sharkbait was first back to the weigh station with one wahoo that just missed the 20-pound minimum weight and a Pelagic Slam of Dolphin, Tuna & Kingfish.    Their aggregate total did not change but no team had a better time.

Winners: Team Fishin A' Loan with their day two (2) catch.

Winners: Team Fishin A’ Loan with their day two (2) catch.

All eyes were on Fishin A Loan, would they be able to add to their total or would another boat have the hot hand for day two?  Again they were able to find the fish catching a 60.5 pounder to back up their day one lunker and four more for a total of 208.2 pounds on day two. This gave Fishin A Loan a two day total of 448.0 pounds and a substantial lead.  Drama remained as Matchless once again was the last boat back to the dock with minutes to spare.  A single 100-pounder could jump them in to Second Place.  Alas it was not to be as they raced down the dock with a 36.0-pounder in arm bumping their total to 123.8 pounds and a solid Third Place finish.

Final Results

Winners:        Fishin A Loan   448.0 pounds

Runners Up:  Sharkbait          182.3 pounds

Third Place:   Matchless           123.8 pounds

Fourth Place: Game Over             87.0 pounds

Fifth Place:     Llangus                   69.5 pounds

Guy Harvey Outpost Launches Fishing for the Future Tournament

January 9, 2015 at 3:38 am | Posted in Bahamas, Billfish, Bimini, Bonefish, Caymans, Conservation, Fishing, Florida, Florida Keys, Galapagos, Green Turtle Club, Guy Harvey, Guy Harvey Outpost Ltd., Islamorada, Lionfish, Marine Science, St. Augustine, Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Running thru 2015, the innovative Fish for the Future tournament is open to anglers anywhere in the world, with divisions and awards for twenty gamefish species.  “With the iGHOFISH app we can now actually host a tournament with literally no limit on fishing boundaries, and in the process populate the foundations’ database with valuable catch data,’ noted Mark Ellert, President of Guy Harvey Outpost Resorts & Lodges.   Ellert announced the launch of the company’s new fishing app, iGHOFISH, created to serve as the record keeper for the tournament. “The iGHOFISH app is a perfect reflection of our Outpost brand focus on convergence of watersport recreation, marine science and conservation. It’s ‘must have’ gear in the tackle box of every Guy Harvey Outpost angler.”  Using software developed by the Snook and Gamefish Foundation, tournament catches will automatically populate the foundation’s database of over 130 inshore and offshore species.

Created initially by the Snook and Gamefish Foundation (SGF) as a snook species data collection process, their Angler Action program has expanded dramatically with its intuitive user-friendly format and ease of use. “Our fishery database now includes over 30,000 catches,” notes Brett Fitzgerald, Executive Director of the SGF. “We’re excited to have Guy Harvey Outpost help us expand our reach with recreational anglers, especially those committed to data-driven fishery management practices and policies.”

“This tournament and our iGHOFISH app are a way of making citizen science just as much fun as fishing,” commented Cliff Jensen, Director of Fishing Programs for Guy Harvey Outpost. “Not all of us who love to fish have a PhD like Guy Harvey, but with this iGHOFISH app every angler can make a difference by collecting data that helps put those PhD’s to work. That sounds like fun, maybe not for the scientists but certainly for the rest of us.”

There is no cost to enter the Guy Harvey Outpost “Fish for the Future” fishing tournament. The iGHOFISH app is free, and is available for iOS and Android phones.

Established in 1998 by Mr. William R. Mote, founder of the world renowned marine science organization Mote Marine Laboratory, the mission of SGF is to aid in the protection and preservation of current fish populations for future generations by facilitating coordination between anglers, researchers, and policy makers. SGF maintains an unwavering ethos of the conservation, preservation, restoration and enhancement of estuarine and coastal water habitats that define fishing – and SGF believes informed anglers are the key to realizing these goals.

SGF’s Angler Action program was designed with Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute and input from the TPWD Coastal Fisheries Division and its data is used by Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for conduction stock assessments. The program now stands on the threshold of creating a global network of angling data that will assist with stock assessments and functional habitat identification and use.

PANAMA SPORTFISHING MOTHER-SHIP ADVENTURE

Panama Yacht and Fishing Charters (PYFC) is the newest member of Guy Harvey Outpost Resorts & Lodges’ Expedition Collection.  The Ms B Haven, mother-ship & fleet are based in Panama City, Panama and available for charter in both the Caribbean and Pacific.  “Panama is an adventure travel paradise and a destination without equal for world class sportfishing and island hopping,” commented Guy Harvey Outpost President, Mark Ellert announcing the new partnership.  “Instead of settling for a single location, this Outpost offers the best of all worlds – a fleet of rooms that can move around this amazing country.   Whether it’s offshore big-game fishing in the Pacific, backcountry fishing along the Caribbean coast, exploring the Canal Zone, or discovering the remote and beautiful Pearl and San Blas Islands, there’s literally something of interest for everyone and PYFC Outpost can take you there.”

Ms B Haven

Ms B Haven, fish in luxury by day and lounge in your private fishing lodge by night.

Fishing from a mother-ship allows you the freedom to fish legendary places like Pinas Bay and Hanibal Bank or explore the idyllic San Blas archipelago.  The PYFC Outpost fleet includes a 98’ tri-deck motor yacht, two sportfishing boats – a 66’ Buddy Davis and 37’ Strike – and a flats skiff. The mother-ship carries a complement of water-toys, jet skis and a complete dive center.

Cherin III at anchor in Panama.

Cherin III at anchor in Panama.

Owned by a Florida based fishing enthusiast, the Panama Yacht & Fishing Charters Outpost is operated by South Africa native Hennie Marais, considered one of Panamas’ most respected sportfishing outfitters and lodge operators. “We have assembled a group of captains and crew to rival any tournament caliber sportfishing team you’ll find stateside”, notes Marais. “The Buddy Davis and Strike are equipped with all the best big-game tackle, and the mother-ship is our luxury lodge that is never far out of range when it’s time for lines-out.”

Panama native and seasoned sportfishing Captain Yasser “Jacko” Torres runs the Buddy Davis.  Adds Marais, “experience and communication in the cockpit are essential to consistently catching big fish and having fun and PYFC Outpost has that covered.  Jacko and his crew have all the requisite tournament credentials and are fluent in English, French and Russian, as well as Spanish, so anglers from all over the world will certainly enjoy their time with us.”

In commenting on the newest Expedition Collection property, Outpost co-founder and IGFA trustee Bill Shedd compared the new PYFC Outpost to long-range fishing operations common to southern California, where his company AFTCO is based.  “While I’ve enjoyed many long range fishing trips, and you can always move around to find fish, they seldom have the space, amenities and comfort to bring along the family or business associates.  Our new PYFC Outpost eliminates that problem, without question.  Fish or fun, dive or sun.  You decide, but its top-of-class”.

The PYFC Outpost fleet accommodates up to twelve guests and is available for three and six day charters, with customized float plans based on cruising or fishing preferences.  For charter information, contact Guy Harvey Outpost toll free at 1.800. 513.5257 or visit www.GuyHarveyOutpost.com.

Known as one of the fastest fish in the ocean, wahoo don’t last long on a dinner plate either.    Capt. DiGiulian’s class will teach anglers how to target and more consistently catch wahoo in the cooler months of the year.  He is co-founder of the IGFA School of Sportfishing and has lectured on fishing techniques around the world through his Saltwater Professional Consulting.

Tony Wahoo

Captain Anthony DiGulian and his favorite wahoo rig.

Unlike most locales where wahoo are often considered incidental catches due to their somewhat nomadic and loner nature, at Old Bahama Bay, a Guy Harvey Outpost Expedition Lodge they are  caught consistently October to March.   Double and triple headers of wahoo are relatively common during the season. One-hundred pounders are caught each year in the Bahamas. Wahoo grow quite large with the all tackle record reaching 184 pounds. Just north of Old Bahama Bay is the area known as “Wahoo Alley.”  This stretch, where the Little Bahama Bank meets the Gulfstream, gets special recognition on fishing charts.   Wahoo also make great table fair  and can be found at your local sushi bar as Ono.  To celebrate WAHOO Season, Guy Harvey Outpost is hosting the Wahoo Bonfire Festival and Tournament at Old Bahama Bay February 26th – March 1st 2015.  The Wahoo Bonfire Festival will feature a variety of activities including a Burning Wahoo Sculpture by artist Bobby Little.
